Fiddler on the Roof
is based on Sholem Aleichem stories by special permission of Arnold Perl
Book by JOSEPH STEIN, Music by JERRY BOCK, Lyrics by SHELDON HARNICK

Set in the small Jewish shtetl of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia, 1905, the story follows Tevye, a poor milkman trying to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions while outside influences encroach upon his family’s lives. Tevye must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—who wish to marry for love rather than through the local matchmaker—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

The “fiddler on the roof” is Tevye’s metaphor for survival: a precarious attempt to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking one’s neck. As the world shifts beneath him, Tevye engages in frequent, humorous, and poignant “conversations” with God, trying to find the line where tradition must bend before it breaks. It is a story of fatherhood, faith, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Runtime: Approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Includes a 15-minute intermission.

Content Advisory: Fiddler on the Roof is a beautiful, deeply moving story about family, love, and resilience that has captivated audiences of all generations. Because it explores real historical events, the second act includes mature themes such as anti-Semitic prejudice, community displacement, and a brief depiction of a village raid.

Age Suggestion: We recommend this production for audience members ages 8 and older due to its mature historical themes and a running time of approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Children under 6 are generally not permitted in the auditorium out of respect for the performers and other patrons.
